Barbara’s Story
A joyful greeting is her lasting legacy.
Carly Migliore works as a security officer at the entrance of St. Joseph Hospital. Each day, she watches patients make the walk from their cars up to the front doors, “More than verbally, you see it in their faces,” she says. “If they have any tension showing on their face when they start walking up the path and through the gardens, you can see their faces change – they start to lighten.”
“Last year’s gardens were beautiful,” remembers Carly. “This spring, some of our regular patients started asking when the flowers would be put in again. When they were, the gardeners outdid themselves. There is beauty everywhere you look. Even the islands in the parking lot have plantings. Personally, it sets the tone for my day.”
The gardens that greet our patients weren’t always so magnificent. They were made possible thanks to one person, Barbara Cassidy. Barbara passed away in 2009 and included a bequest gift to St. Joseph Healthcare in her will. She regularly gave small gifts to St. Joseph Healthcare and would have been amazed to see the huge impact her bequest gift has had for our patients, their families, and our staff!
Because of Barbara’s gift, patients can find a moment of calm as they pause to appreciate the gardens. When people come in for a routine visit, a medical procedure or to visit a loved one – they find a joyful greeting in our gardens and from our amazing staff. Barbara’s gift transformed St. Joseph Hospital. Though Barbara is missed, her memory lives on through her exceptional generosity.
