Dr. James is a native of Charleston, South Carolina. He received his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina, where he served as class president. He completed his internship and residency at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, where he trained with leaders in gastroenterology and hepatology and was inducted into the Distinguished Teaching Society by the medical student body.
He completed his fellowship in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University of North Carolina (UNC), during which he also earned a Master of Science in Clinical Research with a focus on cost analysis of therapeutic endoscopic procedures. During his fellowship, he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society and served as an instructor in the Clinical Epidemiology course for UNC medical students.
Dr. James subsequently completed advanced training in endoscopic ultrasound at the University of Montreal, which allows for the diagnosis and management of pancreatic and biliary conditions.
He is an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of New England and was honored with the “Outstanding Preceptor in Internal Medicine” award in 2022. Dr. James has published more than 70 peer-reviewed publications and co-authored three book chapters. He is committed to providing advanced endoscopic care as well as comprehensive management of gastrointestinal, pancreatic, and liver conditions for patients across Maine.
Outside of work, Dr. James enjoys skiing, camping, and hiking with his wife, their daughters, and their golden retriever, Acadia.
Dr. James area of expertise is therapeutic endoscopy, a field that provides minimally invasive non-surgical approaches to diagnose, treat and palliate conditions of the GI tract, bile ducts and pancreas.
He also has an additional focus on large/complex colon polyps and Dysplastic Barrett’s Esophagus.
