Dr. James is a native of Charleston, South Carolina. He received his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina where he served as class president. He completed his internship and residency at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland where he was mentored by world-renowned liver and GI specialists. While at Johns Hopkins, Dr. James was inducted into the Distinguished Teaching Society, a high honor bestowed by the third and fourth year medical students.
He went on to complete Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Endoscopy training at the University of North Carolina (UNC). During his time at UNC, Dr. James completed a Master of Science in Clinical Research with a focus on cost analysis of therapeutic endoscopic procedures. He was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society during his fellowship and instructed the Clinical Epidemiology course for medical students.
Dr. James is a faculty member at the University of New England and was honored with the “Outstanding Preceptor in Internal Medicine” award in 2022 by the medical student class. He has published 69 peer-reviewed publications and co-authored three book chapters. He is excited to be a part of St. Joseph Healthcare and serving patients by offering advanced endoscopic services and medical management of conditions affecting the GI tract, pancreas and liver for the people of Maine.
When not working, Dr. James enjoys spending time skiing, camping and hiking with his wife, daughters and their golden retriever, Acadia.
Dr. James area of expertise is therapeutic endoscopy, a field that provides minimally invasive non-surgical approaches to diagnose, treat and palliate conditions of the GI tract, bile ducts and pancreas.
He also has an additional focus on large/complex colon polyps and Dysplastic Barrett’s Esophagus.
