On Tuesday, January 16, St. Joseph Healthcare announced the naming of its orthopedics services for the late Cathy Gero. This was in recognition of Cathy’s many years of service and her husband Jim’s decision to contribute $2 million to improve and support orthopedics services at St. Joseph Healthcare.
“We are so grateful to Jim Gero for this generous donation in honor of his late wife, the wonderful Cathy Gero,” said Mary Prybylo, President of St. Joseph Healthcare. “Cathy was an engaged community member and a lovely person. We are grateful that her legacy will live on and ensure St. Joseph Healthcare can continue to provide best-in-class orthopedic care close to home for so many community members.”
Present at the naming ceremony were several of the Downeast Orthopedics surgeons who perform surgery at St. Joseph Hospital, including Tony Tsismenakis, MD, Stephen Walsh, MD, and Ken Morse, MD.
“Cathy was a very spiritual person who cared deeply about the well-being of others, particularly those less fortunate,” said Brad Coffey, St. Joseph Foundation President. She regularly provided helpful advice, sage counsel and hours of her time to support the mission of St. Joseph Healthcare.”
Her husband, Jim, and niece, Cristin, attended the ceremony. Mr. Gero said, “St. Joseph Healthcare meant a great deal to Cathy. She valued the organization’s dedication to caring for their community and providing great patient care. Cathy was the kind of person who ended each day asking, ‘What have I done today for others?’ She was so committed to making a difference. This contribution in Cathy’s honor and memory will enable St. Joe’s to continue to make a positive difference in our community for years to come.
