David J. Koffman, MD – Vice President of Medical Affairs
Dr. Koffman: People sometimes assume only large academic medical centers can deliver the most advanced care. The truth is, right here in Bangor, St. Joseph Healthcare offers a unique combination of leading-edge technology and deeply personal, relationship-based care. As Vice President of Medical Affairs and a practicing internist at St. Joseph Internal Medicine, every day I see how our team goes above and beyond for patients. You don’t need to leave your local area to receive safe, innovative, high-quality care.
Dr. Koffman: We’ve worked hard to expand specialty services so patients can stay near family and friends while receiving advanced treatment. Our orthopedics program now offers robotic-assisted total joint replacements, supported by new surgical equipment generously provided by donor Jim Gero. We’ve also introduced robotic gynecologic surgery, giving women access to minimally invasive options that speed recovery.
Our growing interventional pain management program helps patients regain mobility and quality of life. In addition, our cardiology, gastroenterology, and urology teams provide comprehensive care right here in Bangor, eliminating the need to travel long distances for specialty services.
Dr. Koffman: Emergency care is at the heart of what we do. Our Emergency Department is open 24/7 and equipped to handle everything from sprains and ear infections to heart attacks, strokes, trauma, and sepsis.
We’ve expanded our capabilities with a dedicated fast track service that allows patients with urgent but less severe needs to be seen quickly, which shortens wait times for everyone. To improve access, we added a second CT scanner to reduce delays for both ED and outpatient imaging. Recently, we installed a state-of-the-art MRI scanner that provides sharper images and greater patient comfort.
We are proud to hold Geriatric Emergency Department Accreditation (GEDA), underscoring our dedication to the unique needs of older adults.
Dr. Koffman: With the support of our community, we continue to strengthen our technology and programs. Our cardiology department has grown with an additional echocardiography machine, generously donated by Rick and Ellen Port. In sleep medicine, we’ve expanded our testing capacity to diagnose and treat sleep apnea and related conditions.
Thanks to new orthopedic surgical equipment, again supported by donor Jim Gero, we are performing more advanced procedures with precision and efficiency. These investments ensure patients have access to the highest level of care in a setting that feels close and familiar.
Dr. Koffman: Technology matters, but compassion defines us. Our clinicians and staff take time to listen and treat every patient like family. In the ED, we are proud to have Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner (SAFE) nurses who are specially trained to support survivors of assault with dignity and care.
We also provide blessing bags stocked with essentials such as snacks, toiletries, and warm clothing so no one leaves our care without comfort and support.
Dr. Koffman: St. Joseph Healthcare combines the warmth of a community hospital with the innovation of a larger medical center. Our upcoming ED renovation will expand space, improve patient flow, and allow us to care for more people with greater efficiency.
Whether you need a routine check-up, a specialized procedure, or immediate emergency attention, you can count on St. Joseph Healthcare for high-quality medicine delivered with compassion close to home.
